The following is from Threlfall, Twenty-six great migration colonists to New England & their origins, 1993:

"There has been an effort, in several genealogical monographs, to assign William Witherell to various families. Peter Charles Witherell and Edwin Ralph Witherell's well documented "History and Genealogy of the Witherell/Wetherell Family of New England" repeats the tradition that he was a descendant of Rev. John Rogers the Martyr of Smithfield, but there is no reason to believe this. It has also been suggested by Savage, as well as others, that Rev. William was related to Sarah, the wife of Stephen Fosdick (1584-1664), and that he was a brother to John Wetherell of Watertown, and an uncle of William Witherell of Taunton, Mass. All of these claims have no proven basis. Most likely the discovery of William Witherell's birthplace will resolve these questions."

Earlier, Threlfell notes that our William seems to be from the Yorkshire area of England -- as it seems he moved to Kent for a job after he got his Mastres. Venn's "Alumni Cantabrigienses" notes: [he] matriculated sizar from Corpus Christi, Easter 1619. Of Yorkshire. B.A. 1622/3; M.A. 1626; Schoolmaster of Maidstone..."

Fifteen years later, researches have still not found his origins (Robert Charles Anderson, Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635 (Boston, Mass.: New England Historical Genealogical Society, 2008), 7: 317-22.)
