About William Wetherford (Whitheford)

The Weatherford Family was among the earliest settlers in the Colony of Virginia. My first Weatherford ancestor who crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Warwickshire, England was John Witherford/Weatherford who was listed in York Co., Virginia 6/26/1642

Thomas Weatherford b. 1585 married Margaret Waring on Jan. 30, 1609 in the town of Tanworth, England. They had several children. One of their sons named John, who was born in the year 1615 in Warwickshire, England came to America and was listed in York Co., VA on 6/26/1642. John Weatherford lived to be 91 yrs old. He died in April of 1706 in James City, VA. John had one son named William who was born 1645 in York Co., VA. William lived in Henrico, Co., VA on the main branch of Fallen Creek. William had 6 sons, Thomas b. 1675, William b. 1678, Richard b.1680, John b.1682, James b.1684, and Charles b. 1687 (Henrico Co., VA)In 1708, they were listed in Hanover Co., VA The original spelling of the name Whitheford or Witherford was changed to Wetherford/Weatherford in the 1700's. Apparently the name was being mispronounced in the Colonies and was changed to a more "phonetic spelling" In the late 1740's the families of Thomas, William and Richard Wetherford/Weatherford moved to the new frontier in Lunenburg Co., Virginia. William, Thomas and Richard lived close to one another on or near the Meherrin River and Cub and Buckhorn Creeks. William's son Major Weatherford born 1710, is listed in Lunenburg Co., VA in 1750 as receiving patents for around one thousand acres of land in the upper Cub Creek section.

By the mid to late 1700's there were descendants of John Weatherford (b. 1645) in at least 8 counties in Southern Virginia as well as the Southern States of Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, N. Carolina, S. Carolina and Alabama. The Weatherford Family continued to grow in America and explore new frontiers, they have been found in every chapter of American History. My family research has made American History come alive for me. I hope that you enjoy my pages and I hope that I can inspire you to also "Dig your Family Roots"
