Surveyors William Whatley & his brother, Wilson Whatley, were surveying land when they were killed by Indians, at Cherokee Corner, Georgia, circa 1776. Thus, at 14 yrs. of age, Samuel Whatley, son of William Whatley & Mary Whatley (Edwards), assumed responsibility for his mother & the 3 younger children on their farm.
