William Whitaker was born November 22, 1772 near Linwood in Rowan County (now Davidson County), North Carolina, the son of Joshua Sr. and Mary Reed Whitaker.

He married Mary "Polly" Cannaday on January 31, 1793. William and Mary moved to Fairview, N.C. around 1798. William prospered as a farmer and mill owner. William and Mary had eight children. Davey Crockett once had dinner and spend the night with William Whitaker and his family in the early 1800's while he was living in Swannanoa.

William died in Fairview on February 21, 1860. Both he and Mary are buried in Cane Creek Cemetery.
