The Early History of the Wightman Family in England describes the reasonable scenario that John was the son of William Wightman of Wyken (Hinckley, near Burbage).

“He purchased 10 May 1554, the old manor of Wykin, in the parish of Hinckley in Leicestershire. He was survived by one son and four daughters.“.

William Wightman of WYKEN HALL, HINCKLEY, CO. LEICESTER.

The Manor of Wyken was acquired by William Wightman after the dissolution of the monasteries. From the ancient records it would appear that a substantial portion, if not the whole, was tenanted for some time before the purchase, by William Wightman and his ancestors.

It is recorded that on 12th May, 1543, a License was granted to Edward Fenes, Lord Clynton and Saye, and Robert Tyrwhitt, to alienate 2 messages and lands in Wyken, Co., Leicester, in the tenures of Wyghtman and Robert Byrehley to the said William and the heirs of his body. Many extracts of wills of the members of the family living at Wyken, and also Visitation Records will be found in other chapters. It is not shewn when this property went out of the family, but this appears to have been towards the end of the seventeenth century.
