Muc h sickness pre^ailed in this command & many soldiers were f urloughed or mustered out in Oct/No^ 1775. WW Departed fo r home with Nathaniel Palmerly & others on Oct 17, 1775. T his is the time period that WW's Family is thought to ha^ e resided at Huntington Bay, Long Island where his infant D auughter Hannah witnessed the Battle of Brooklyn at Long Is land, NY in Summer, 1776. The Willards must ha^e left b y a ship, likely owned by a Saybrook or Guilford, CT Mercha nt Family (such as Stannard, Post or Dennison,etc) by Aug , 1776, after the first few day's battle. WW is listed in F rederic Mather's "Refugees from CT to NY" as transporting t he Capt Da^id Howell Family from Sag Harbor, Long Island t o Stonington or Saybrook, CT in about Sept, 1776. He may ha ^e done Pri^ateering Shipwork, along with brother-in-law Se a Capt Nathan Post in 1776-1779. 1779 --> In the same ^ol ume, p575, WW is listed as a Pri^ate, whom deserted on Jul y 21, 1779 under Capt John Williams, ser^ing under Lt Col N athan Gallup, stationed July 11, 1779, at Ft Griswold, grot on, New London Co, CT. WW may ha^e preferred to ser^e o n a sailing ship instead as no further RW records are foun d for him after this date. He may ha^e stopped Pri^ateerin g in Dec, 1781 after the Birth of his son William, JR & th e surrender of the British at Yorktown, ^irginia.
