Origin

William Withers (and Wither, Widder, etc) was born about 1605 at Arkholme, the parish of Melling, county of Lancashire, England, the son of John Wither.[1]

The birth date is an estimate, based on his estimated marriage date, assuming he married at about 25 years of age.

Unknown Wife's Name

William married before 1630 to an unknown wife. Her given name has faded from the register which recorded her burial, and her maiden name is unknown. She was buried at Arkholme on 20 August 1661 (p 10).[1]

She is sometimes called "Frances (Claiborne)," but Robert E. Withers concludes, "the whole Claiborne-Withers connection is not of authentic record" (pp 192-93).[1]

Death and Legacy

William Wither's death was recorded in the Parish Register of Melling on 10 June 1684 (p 11).[1]
