About William Woodham

Special note about the William Woodham who appears in newspapers 1797. He was executed 1797 for 'returning from transportation'. Our William Woodham was born 1806. Therefore whatever connection there may be between these two fellows, they are not father and son.

There is another William Woodham who was executed in London in 1815.

And I seem to remember seeing a William Woodham in the data in Australia, transported 1799 or thereabouts.

1836 - wife remarries

Absence of 1841 data

A further complication is that 1841 census records for parts of Wiltshire are missing, and this seems to include Great Bedwin. People close to our William (including himself) likely died before 1851 or emigrated or were transported or were in prison. So the absence of 1841 records is a nuisance.
[]
Great Bedwyn, by the way, is more commonly spelled Great Bedwin.
Archives generally find both but not necessarily so

1806~08 - William Woodham lookalikes

[] William Woodham (bapt 1808) of Cholderton is *not* our William. He can be found in later censuses living in other parts of the country, as a property manager or something. [] William Woodham (bapt 1808) of Chitterne appears in the 1871 census with a wife named Sarah. [] This essentially confirms that the birth of our William Woodham went unrecorded and could be in Great Bedwin as easily as anywhere else. This would most likely happen for a nonconformist sect. However the birth records for sisters Ann and Sarah exist. OTOH there are great gaps between the births of these siblings, allowing for other unrecorded siblings.
