William Brereton, 1st Baron Brereton

William Brereton, 1st Baron Brereton (1550 – 1 October 1631) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1597 and 1622. He was created a peer in the Peerage of Ireland in 1624 as Baron Brereton.

Brereton was the son of Sir William Brereton of Brereton, Cheshire and was baptised on 6 February 1550. He was about nine when his father died in 1559 and he succeeded to the extensive family estates. He was educated at Oxford University and was awarded BA in 1568. He was admitted at Lincoln's Inn in 1569. From 1573 he was JP for Cheshire and was High Sheriff of Cheshire from 1581 to 1582. In 1586 he built a mansion at Brereton which was similar to Rocksavage, the house of his father-in-law Sir John Savage. He was knighted in 1588. He was commissioner for musters in 1595 and in 1596.[1]

In 1597, Brereton was elected Member of Parliament for Cheshire. He was elected MP for Cheshire again in 1614 and in 1621.[1] He had an estate near Old Leighlin, for which he and his heirs were absentee landlords. He was created Baron Brereton of Leighlin in the County of Carlow on 11 May 1624.[2] Brereton died at the age of about 80 and was buried at Brereton.[1]

Brereton married Margaret Savage, daughter of Sir John Savage of Rocksavage, Cheshire. They had four sons and four daughters.[1] Most of them died young two who survived to marry were:

• Mary, on 18 July 1608 married Henry, Lord Inchiquin (died 1645), son of Dermod O'Brien, 5th Baron Inchiquin
• John (Sir), of Brereton (born 25 March, 1591), heir apparent, married Anne, daughter of Sir Edward Fitton of Gawsworth, and dying in the lifetime of his father, left by her (who married secondly, Sir Gilbert Gerard), three sons and two daughters:[2]
  • William (1611–1664), successor to his grandfather as 2nd baron.
  • John (1624 – 22 October, 1656)
  • Edward.
  • Mary, married Sir Michael Hutchinson
  • Jane (died 1648) — the eventual heiress of the family — married, around 1646, Sir Robert Holte. Their son was Sir Charles Holte.

• Brereton succeeded to the extensive family estates at an early age. In 1586 he built a magnificent house at Brereton similar in design to that of his father-in-law and possibly the work of the same architect. He had apparently been known to the Earl of Leicester, chamberlain of Chester, for some years before accompanying him on the Netherlands expedition. Most references to Brereton show him as a Cheshire county gentleman: being consulted by the Privy Council in the 1590s about arrangements for the transport of troops to and from Ireland, serving as a commissioner for musters, and considered ‘meet for fidelity and soundness in religion’ to be employed in various measures taken against recusants.
• Brereton’s family status was doubtless sufficient to secure him a parliamentary seat as knight of the shire. Although he was not named to any committees in 1597-8, as knight for Cheshire he may have attended the following: enclosures (5 Nov.), poor law (5 Nov., 22 Nov.), armour and weapons (8 Nov.), penal laws (8 Nov.), monopolies (10 Nov.) and the subsidy (15 Nov.).4
• He had entailed his lands in 1575, but revoked the settlement in 1599 after the death of his wife and all his children except one son and one daughter. Under the new arrangement, he entailed two-thirds of his lands on his son, with contingent remainders to various kinsmen, and left one-third to trustees to provide £1,000 for his daughter. In his will, made on 20 May 1630, he bequeathed his soul to Almighty God and hoped for ‘the fruition of the eternal glory prepared for his elect and chosen people’. He died on 1 Oct. 1631, and was buried at Brereton.5

• William Brereton, 1st Baron Brereton of Leighlin was baptised on 6 February 1550 at Brereton Hall, Cheshire, England.2 He was the son of Sir William Brereton and Jane Warburton.2 He married Margaret Savage, daughter of Sir John Savage and Lady Elizabeth Manners.2 He died on 1 October 1631 at age 81.2 He was buried at Brereton Hall, Chester, England.2 His will (dated 20 May 1630) was probated on 16 February 1631/32.2

• The manor of Bretune is listed in Domesday Book. The house dates from 1586, the date inscribed over the entrance. It was built for Sir William Brereton (1550–1631), created Baron Brereton of Leighlin, Co. Carlow in 1624. A portrait of Sir William, dated 1579, with a cameo of Queen Elizabeth in his cap, is at the Detroit Institute of Arts. William, 3rd Lord Brereton (1631–1679) was a distinguished man of letters and a founder of the Royal Society. His younger son, Francis, 5th Lord Brereton, died a bachelor in 1722, ending the Brereton family male line. ______________________

Lord William Brereton was the 2nd Lord of Leighlin, Ireland. He inherited the title from his grandfather at the death of his father, John. William was not born in Ireland and he did not die there, simply inherited the title. He and his wife Elizabeth had 10 children: William, Henry, George, Thomas, Margaret, Anne, Mary, Elizabeth, Jane, and Frances. The last five daughters did not marry.

There is a question as to a possible 11th child John. Much has been written about John who was a Vicar of St. Mary's in Beverly and raised by his supposed uncle, Captain John Brereton of Nantwich, the brother of this Lord William Brereton. John (the supposed son) was a Puritan and the rest of his supposed family were Royalists of either Catholic or Anglican beliefs. When this William had financial problems due to the civil war some have stated that John who was leaning toward becoming a Reverend gave up his possible link with this family. He was promised a living with his Uncle Captain John Brereton, raised by him and became the Vicar he had wanted to become. So when his older biological brothers died he was in line for the title; however he had given that right up when he was sent to be raised by his uncle. Rumor has it that this William's younger sister, Elizabeth had destroyed any possible paperwork that could link John to this William due to his religious beliefs.

Note that the genealogy records of Omerod did not list John as a child to this William either.
