William de Camville of Clifton

The earliest record of a Camville associated with Clifton...is William Camville, who is recorded as holding land in Clifton Campville in 1200.

He is *probably* the William de Camville cited in charters (along with Walter and Richard de Camville) as a brother of Gerard de Camville - and Gerard was *certainly* the son and heir of the Sir Richard de Camville who founded Coombe Abbey, as he is so described in - and even witnessed - that very charter.

William de Camvill, castellan of Llanstephan (Pembrokeshire), was of Arrow (Warwickshire) and of Clifton Campvill (Staffordshire) in right of his wife, Albreda.[7]

The parents of the William de Camville who was married to Albreda Marmion are not specified by Cawley's Medieval Lands.[6]

Cawley's Medieval Lands states this William de Camville died before 25 April 1200,[6] however, this is contradicted by the Pipe Rolls from 7 and 8 John [1204-6], in which he is mentioned with his wife, Albreda.[4]

Geoffrey was son and heir of William de Canville, by Auberee (living 1233), daughter and heir of Geoffrey Marmion, of Clifton, and of Arrow, co. Warwick. Auberee and her husband are stated by Dugdale and others to be the parents - instead of the great-grandparents - of the Geoffrey in the text. [Complete Peerage III:3 note (d)]
