About William de la Spine

English name, Latinized version of Spine, originating from a town in Warwickshire. Arms: sable, a chevron argent between three crescents or.

Married the heiress of Coughton or Cocton.

1250-Bought corn at Kinewarton

1257- Paid 4 silver marks to Hugh de Burley and his wife Joan for 1/2 a virgate of land in Cocton (right of Joan de Burley) 1274- Paid Hugh de Norfolk and Joan his wife 40 silver marks for two-third part of one carucate of land, the moiety of 2 messuages and an acre of meadow in Samburn and Cocton In the same year paid 73 silver marks to John, son of Master John de Billesby and wife Constance for the moiety of 2 messuages and 1 carucate of land in Cocton and Samburn 1281- William de Spineto of Cocton and his wife Joan grant to William le Botiler a messuage in Cocton formerly belonging to Alice, wife of Roger de Kenewarton. 1284 - Absolution of William de Spineto of Cocton and his delivery from prison. For some offense, the nature of which has been lost over time, William de Spine had been thrown into prison and excommunicated by the church. Apparently he had in some way become indebted to the Archbishop of York to the large amount of £46. An outline of the proceedings is given in the Register of Bishop Giffard of Worcester, published by the Worcestershire Historical Society, vol II, page 231, 7 Kalends of May, 1284, mandate to the Dean of Warwick to publish absolution from excommunication granted William de Spineto of Cocton, also a mandate to the Sheriff of Warwick to deliver him from prison. Roger de Spineto, clerk, is his son. Bond by the said Roger to pay the Bishop £46 in yearly installments owing to the late Archbishop of York, brother of the Bishop. This suit accounts for the transfer in 1291 by Roger de Spine of his interest in Cocton to the Bishop of Worcester. The later grant by the Bishop in 1295 to William de Spine, Roger's brother, probably shows that the claim of £46 had been paid.

Very shortly after this a dispute between William de Spineto and Joan and the Prior of Studley concerning tithes and some matter of violence was settled before the Bishop of Worcester in 1275 and some unspecified sentence upon them was released. (fn. 75) Whether from the same sentence or not, the archdeacon was ordered to pronounce the absolution of William in 1279, (fn. 76) and again in 1284, when the sheriff was told to release him from prison. (fn. 77) This later trouble may have had a financial basis, as Roger the clerk, William's son, gave bond for repayment of a debt due to the executors of the late Archbishop of York, the bishop's brother. (fn. 78) Probably in fulfilment of this bond Roger gave to the Bishop of Worcester 1 messuage and 3 carucates of land in Coughton. (fn. 79) The bishop surrendered it to the king, who returned it to him, to hold of the chief lords of the see, (fn. 80) and in October 1293 the bishop granted to William son of William de Spineto the manor of Coughton near Spernall. (fn. 81) Subsequently (see above), the Bruly manor of Coughton was acquired by William de Spineto in September 1298,* and in March 1299 he settled on himself and Margery his wife the manor of Coughton, with all its rights and property there and in Wike (see below) 'as well within the liberties of the Templars (fn. 82) as without'.*

It was surmised by C.W. Throckmorton[1] that Joan was the daughter of Ranulph de Cocton, however there is a century between them. She has since been conflated with Joan de Cocton, wife of Robert Cocton, and their daughter Joan de Kinewarton.

She also has been confused with Joan de Cocton, wife of Hugh de Norfolk, all of whom were joined in a grant of land in Samborne and Coughton in 1275.
