William von Buchenröder

Settled in Bethelsdorp, Eastern Cape and ran a general dealers shop. Started his business with 2 partners and bought out their shares to become sole owner. He was well supported by the local African families, but was less so with the 'coloured' community who were reluctant to pay their debts. He had a small dairy herd, sheep and pigs, and supplied the local school and some villagers with milk, and occasionally fresh port or mutton too. He could not expand his farm due to council regulations.
