"Culpeper Star-Exponent on 15 July 1937, page 8, column 3: "MRS. JOEL HITT DEAD -- Mrs. Wilmuth Annie Bowen Hitt, widow of the late William Joel Hitt, died Sat. night, July the tenth, at her home at Norman, aged seventy-eight. Deceased is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Frank Hartman and Mrs. Gordon Hartman, of Washington, and her son, Henry Hitt of Massaponax. Also by her grandchildren, Mrs. Charles Ball, Mrs. Lewis Pulley, Mr. William Bruffey; and one great-grandchild, Bobby Brouffey. Deceased was the daughter of the late Joseph Henry Bowen and Sallie Bowen, his wife, of Culpeper. Mrs. Hitt was for fifty-eight yeaers an active member of the Bethel Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at half past two o'clock at the residence with interment in the family burying ground, Rev. Charles Clement officiating in the absence of Rev. G.W. Cox, pastor of deceased. The active pallbearers were: Messrs. Russell Brown, H.N. Hutcherson, Fred Huffman, Aubrey Johnson, David Fletcher, J.W. Taylor, Robert Covington, Charlie Tinsley, Tom Kilby, R.E. Fincham, O.R. Coates, Penn Witt, Clarence Brice, and John Waters. Honorary pallbearers were: Taylor Griffin, John Griffin, Tom Hitt, M.A. Hitt, Tom Freeman, Luther Hitt, John M. Lewis, Johnsie Spicer, Early Smith, C.M. Waite, W.T. Taylor, Will Pierce, Keith Brown, T.D. Bickers, William Brown and W.G. Morris. Friends and relatives from a distance attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Wade Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Travers, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Freeman, Mr. & Mrs. Witt and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Van Howse and daughter, Mr. David Fletcher of Washington; Mr. Robert Pulley of Mt. Vernon; Mr. Russell Brown of Maryland; Mr. Early Smith and Mr. Aubrey Johnson of Charlottesville."
