In 1843, Wilson married Louisa Roper in Clinton Co, IL. She and her son Simeon both died in 1845. In 1846, Wilson married Artimisa Corbit in Smithsville, Arkansas. They moved back to southern Illinois and Wilson enlisted in the Civil War for the Union. He was captured and spent time in Confederate hands, but lived to tell about it.
After the war he worked as a farmer to support his growing family: Louisa b. 1847, Ulysses b. 1849, Margaret Elizabeth b. 1852, Thomas b. 1854, Frances Pamletta b. 1856, Campsadellan "Dellie" b. 1859, Wilson McClure b. 1862, Corbette b. 1863, and Laura Belle b. 1865.
