GEDCOM Note

On tax list 1754 Agusta Co Virginia. Note from Mr Clyde M. Eppard published in the Green County Magazine:

Note dated 6-1-79 The Greene County Eppards may be descended from either the Andrew Eppard line or the Windel (Wendel) Eppard line. The original error was made in selecting Andrew's son as the husband of Margaret Utz, rather than Windel's son, Philip. We know that Margaret Utz married a Philip Eppard, but were not aware that there were two Philip Eppards, one being the son of Windle. Only this past summer did we discover baptismal record in the Lutheran Church in Shenandoah, Virginia revealing the birth of twin boys to Windle and Christine Eppard on April 23, 1780. The first was named Hans George and the second Philip.

Windle came into the Valley in the 1750's and patented land in 1762 covering some 300 acres around "Naked Creek". George Utz was an earlier settler in the Valley so it is known that the Eppards and Utz were close friends and neighbors. On the other hand, Andrew did not move into the Valley until during the 1790's and acquired land from Windel and , since he moved has family from Maryland, the children must have been much older. We need more proof of esactly which Philip married Margaret Utz. Help us!"

Notes written by Marjorie Browkaw of Winterset, Iowa - sent to me by Janet Eppard:

Wendel Ebert (b1734- ) son of Hans Georg (Evert), (our George) and Margaret Starke Ebert. Wendel married Christina

Children: Philip (twin) b.4-23-1780 m. d. m. Margaret Utz Johan Jeorge (Twin (our george) b. 4-23-1780 m. 4-28-1802 d. 1869 baptized 6-27-1780

The twins were Baptized at Saint Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Shenandoah, Va. There was a third child.

Wendel and Christina only had 3 children verified in the 1790 Census. The Eppards came early into the Shenandoah Valley of Va., about 1732 from Pensylvania. This would be Wendel's parents. and Wendel was born in Va. They were Lutherans. We have a copy of the Parish Register of Saint Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church, Shenandoah, showing the date of birth of twins Johan Georg (our George) and twin brother Philip to April 23, 1780. Parents are Wendel Ebert and his wife Christina. (This information was found by Shirley Seal Breeden, Elkton. Va. in the past few years ) 1978

Records show that Wendel and his brother George Ebert, appeared in Court in Augusta Co. Va. concerning patent, which is titleto land, dated 1756. Land was at Elkton, Va. Rockingham Co. (Note that this is Wendel's brother, Hot his son. Both were named Georg. Families used the same name over & over, thus causing much confusion. Names are spelled differently, as many people didn't write, and it was easy to misspell a name.)

George and his twin brother Philip acquired the land in the Shenandoah Valley, after their father Wendel died. Philip sold his land after 1840, part of it to his brother George, and part to his father-in-law _____________ Utz. Philip and his wife Margaret Utz moved to Indiana. This is how William Smith Eppard happened to come to Iowa. He stopped in Indiana to see relatives and then came on to Iowa to homestead land.

Old George & Wendel had a mine on Eppard land on Fox Mountain. Also, on the land stood St. Peters Lutheran Church and the Eppard Cemetaries. There were many graves there & due to a terrible flood in 1800, many graves were moved. The St. Peters Lutheran Church was rebuilt in another area. Geroge and Wendel also were farmers. (This note was written sometime between 1978 and 1996.)
