About Winifred (Winnie) Margaret Shields
Winnie was born to John McCann and Winifred Green. They married in 1887 in Glasgow, as we can see on Winnie’s birth certificate. She was registered as Winifred Margaret.
Winnie came from a large family as we can see on the 1911 Census.
At this time, the family are recorded as living at 521 Duke Street. Glasgow. It is noted that there are five rooms in their home.
Also recorded on the 1911 Census, is that the family were all born in the Lanark area.
Two female relatives are also included on this Census,
Catherine Green aged 45 years and working as a Power Loom Weaver. She too was born in the Lanark area.
The other relative was Margaret Green, aged 31 years. Margaret’s place of birth was given as Ireland.
Margaret was also recorded as a Power Loom Weaver.
One of Winnie’s siblings is recorded quite clearly on the 1911 Census as Donal, not Donald.
Again when you check his birth certificate it is Donal.
Was Margaret Winifred Green’s sister, or sister-in-law? As when Winnie grew up and lived in Riddrie, her Aunt Maggie would visit and knit all during the visit.
Winnie’s father’s occupation was a Pawnbroker. In the 1911 Census her two brothers were Assistant Pawnbrokers. That was John junior, aged 22 years in 1911 and Francis aged 21 years in 1911.
Later Winnie’s brother Charles (Chick) became a chiropodist and her sister Agnes became a music teacher at the Convent of Mercy in Garnethill in Glasgow.
Winnie, Chick and Agnes lived together in Riddrie at 107 Smithycroft Road.
Chick and Agnes never married or had children.
Winnie married late in life at the age of 49 years. She married a Widower who had five grown up children. He had been a neighbour of Winnie’s. This was James Shields. James was about 13 years older than Winnie.
Sadly James Shields died suddenly after a fall at work.
They had been married 10 years.
When Chick died of lung cancer in 1971, his death was recorded by his niece Geraldine Dolan.
Chick died at home.
After Agnes died, Winnie moved to a care home run by The Little Sisters of The Poor in the Robroyston area of Glasgow. Winnie died in 1984.
It is thought that Winnie’s Aunt Maggie Green was connected to the Green family who owned Green’s Playhouse in Glasgow City Centre which opened in 1927. This complex had various areas of entertainment. A ballroom, tea room and cinema. The Playhouse became a music venue until it closed in 1973.
The building was leased to another company who called the venue, The Apollo.
The Apollo closed in 1985 and the building was demolished in 1987. Many big music artists had played at the Glasgow Apollo.
