About Winnifred Kilgore

1) - note: "Clayton" is also sometimes spelled as "Cleaton."

2) - 15 Sept 1998 e-mail from Jerry < penjacc@aol.com >

I think cousin Mary Lou Meade Newman has made a FANTASTIC

find in the following passage of one of her posts!

Her passage is presented here:

Alley Deed to Kilgore 100 acres 12 May 1811:

Indenture between Thomas Alley and Mary his wife...and Hiram

Kilgore (all of Russell County, Virginia...$333.33...land in

Russell County on both sides of Copper Creek a branch of

Clinch River containing 100 acres by survey bearing

dat 21 Sept 1794

Sig: Thomas Alley and Mary Alley

Wit: Robert Kilgore, Charles Kilgore, WINNEY (X) KILGORE

Recorded 05 Nov 1811

The WINNEY KILGORE mentioned in this passage as a witness

has to be the widow of Robert Kilgore, Sr. who was killed by

the Indians in 1782. She is the only Winnie I know of that would

have been old enough to have signed as a witness!

IF this is so, this is the very FIRST mention of her after the

year 1783 when she was listed as a widow on the Russel Co.,

Va. tax rolls.

No one has ever been able to find anything on her after 1783.

This would also be the straw that broke the camel's back in the

story about Winney being the wife of Charles Kilgore of King's Mt.

fame; about Winney dying and Charles marrying again!!!!

I have two other "Winnies, Winneys" on my database. One of

them was born in 1794 and the other was born in 1796.

That would have made them far, far to young to be the witness

in the above land transaction!

Excellent find cousin Mary!

This goes to show that no matter how SMALL a tid-bit a piece

of information may be, IT COULD BE VERY HIGHLY RELEVANT!

Until later, good hunting,

Jerry in Kingsport, TN
