Winnifred Newsom

Timeline (from information in Heinegg's Free African Americans):

Married John Walden c1774 (eldest son Harwood born before 1776).

John Walden died before 7 June 1796 when his wife Winnifred Walden was granted administration on his Northampton County estate [Minutes 1792-6, 240].

By 6 February 1802 Winnifred had married Moses Newsom, who was named as the representative for the estate in the account of sales.

"Winnie" received 50 acres on Little Swamp near the Roanoke River in Moses Newsom's 17 September 1805 Northampton County will, proved in December of that year.

Winnifred Newsom petitioned for her dower the month Moses Newsom died in November 1805. She stated that he had about 600 acres of land on Kerby's Creek and Angelica Branch and asked that infants James and Henry be bound to their brother Nathan Newsom. She also stated that he had fraudulently conveyed all his real estate to his sons James and Henry just before he died.

Winnifred Newsom left a 4 November 1807 Northampton County will, proved in December 1807.

"It does not appear that Winnifred is the mother of any of the Newsom children. She married Moses late in life and they both died after about ten years of marriage."
