About Wolf Chajes

Wolf Chajes and his family are mentioned in The Unbroken Chain by Neil Rosenstein:

2-nd edition, Chapter 11, volume 2, page 804, G15.4

There was very few data. Not even the name of the Wolf's wife. Only one of their chidren was mentioned - Benno Chajes, Professor of medicine on Berlin, page 805, G16.

A lot of information became available since the 2-nd edition was published in 1990. Particularly, most of XIX century and early XX century civil records for territories that used to belong to Poland between 1920 and 1939 are availalbe now on Internet. Records for Danzig (now Gdansk) also are avaialble, though in a different system.

Specifically:

  • Marriage record of 1865 between Wolf Chajes of Zolkiew, a bachelor, and Tema [Polish Jewish name] Braff of Opole Lubelskie, never married in the book of Opole Lubelskie, in Polish
  • 2-nd marriage records, of 1866, between the same spouses in the books of Zolkiew, in German. Probably, Austrian authorities of Zolkiew did not recognize the Russian / Polish marriage. In the records, the wife is named Emma instead of Tema - the name that she will use outside of Russian Poland.
  • Birth records of five kids, between summer 1866 and December 1873, in the book of Opole Lubelskie - the first in Polish, other four in Russian. From the records it is clear that Wolf lived in Austria, but every time temporary was in Opole Lubelskie where Emma gave births. Probably, as it is customary in our extended family, she traveled to her mother to give births.
  • Birth records of three more kids in Danzig, between 1880 and 1888. One of the kids, Lazarus Benno, is the future professor of medicine, who did not use the name Lazarus.
  • Death record of the first son of Wolf and Emma, Hersh (Heinrich) in 1892. He died young, at 20 or 21.
  • Marriage records of three daughters in Danzig, between 1890 and 1897.

There and other records avaialble on Internet let tell about the life of the generation 16.

3-rd edition, Chapter 11, volume 4, page 253, G15.4

After the 2-nd edition was published in 1990, relatives provided more data to Dr. Neil Rosenstein. The data were added in the 3-rd edition. However, parts of the data look suspicious, or even outright wrong.

Specifically, in the 3-rd edition, instead of Emma (or Tema) Braff his wife was named Scheina Chaya. However, it may be a relatively benight mistake, because Scheina Chaya Braff was the name of Emma's mother. Descendants who provided the info could mix up the names of great-grandma and 2-nd great-grandma.

Benno Chajes, G16.1 in the 3-rd edition was not only a Professor of Medicine and Hygiene in Berlin-Charlottensberg, but also a serious politician. In Weimar Germany, i.e. before 1933, he was a member of Prussian Parlament.

Five children other than Benno were documented in the 3-rd edition, G16.2 to G16.6. None of the five is reflected in the Polish / Danzig birth records.

At least one of the "3-rd edition chidren", a daughter Leah born in 1853, G16.6, could not be a kid of Wolf, because in 1853 he was only 8 years old. Given that Wolf and Emma married in 1865, it is higly unlikely that they could have a son Reuben, G16.5, born the same year.

On the other hand, we have no idea where the family lived between the late 1873 and 1880 and if they had kids born during the period. Rather likely that they had. Between 1886 and 1870, Emma had kids every 1.5 years..
