(information was obtained by Lorraine Zeiler on August 9, 1990 when they visited the “Rathaus”(City Hall) in Obergrombach, Germany).
WENNINGER
What does this name mean?
Originally the name was WENING which came from Holland to Bavaria and later spelt WENNING. It means big or small and the “ER” was added later through marriage. There was also a place called WENINGEN, BADEN. WENNEN also meant to cry. It may have stemmed from “town crier”.
The true coat of arms cannot be found, although I suspect they did not have one, as they were simple farming people and craftsmen.
Wenninger or Weninger
There has been much discussion, whether the name was spelt Wenninger or Weninger. It seems Wenninger was used up to and including Albert, as his gravestone marker is Wenninger. From then on it appears that only one “n” is used. I contacted Emmons County to see how it was registered and the county clerk said it was spelt both ways. One of Albert’s sons, Stephen kept the two “n”s. Anton’s sons also spell it Wenninger.
Stephens daughters used two “n”s as well. From speaking to some of Albert’s descendents, they tell me that Albert’s children all used two “n”s but from thereon some dropped one “n”.
