About Yehuda Leib Saltzman
Full Name: Yehuda Leib Zalckwa English Name: Leon Saltzman Place of Birth: Kurow, Poland Date of Birth: 15th December 1894 Date of Death: 8th November 1985, Wellington, New Zealand
Early Years: He had one brother and two sisters; he was number three out of his siblings.
His early days were quite uneventful, typical of a small Shtetl in Poland at that time and in those days. When he reached adulthood he became a men’s tailor.
In 1931 when he was 37, he went to New Zealand by himself because his older brother had left Poland, wandered the world at the age of 14, and eventually found himself in New Zealand, so my great grandfather joined him there and he became a ladies tailor.
His wife, with their three children, who were born in Poland, joined him in New Zealand in 1932, where my grandfather Joe and his younger brother Harold, were born in 1933 and 1934 respectively.
At that time they lived in Dunedin until 1946, they then moved to Wellington. He came from quite a religious background and so he would have gone to a Jewish Cheder. He remained religiously observant till the end of his life.
Later Years: When he reached 70 years old he retired and spent his time enjoying gardening and reading Jewish books. During that time he also came to Melbourne on numerous occasions to visit his two sons and their families. He died a month before his 91st birthday in a Wellington hospital in New Zealand.
Hobbies: His hobbies were gardening and he also enjoyed the occasional game of cards, 500 with his friends.
Special Events: The special events in his life would have been migrating from his small Shtetl home in Kurow, Poland to New Zealand and finding himself in a completely new environment and new way of life. In addition to that, the births of his two youngest children in New Zealand were certainly highlights.
