Yells at Night

Yells-at-Night was a Piegan man (of the Blackfoot Confederacy)

The Piegan, aka Piikani, are a Native American people from the Great Plains who speak Algonquian. They are the largest of the three Blackfoot-speaking groups that make up the Blackfoot Confederacy. The other two groups are the Siksika and Kainai. (The Blackfoot Confederacy: Kanai or Blood, Piikani, Northern Peigan or Blackfoot, Siksika or Blackfoot, Amskapi Pikuni, South Piegan or Blackfeet)

Biography:
Yells-at-Night was born c. 1875 (based on calculations back from date of death and age). His parents have not been identified and as such, it cannot be determined (yet) where he was born, about 2/3 of the Blackfoot Confederacy was located in Canada. One assumes that he was born in Montana to be admitted at the Canton Asylum.

Yells-at-Night was admitted to the Canton Asylum for Insane Indians on July 28, 1906, and diagnosed later with Cortical epilepsy aka Cortical dysplasia (Cortical dysplasia is a common cause of epilepsy that occurs when the top layer of the brain doesn't form properly.) He died in the asylum from tuberculosis on November 21, 1908, at the age of 33.

-the 1895 Piegan census pg. 105/695, line 631 had Yells in Night (F) age 26 = b. 1869, married to Clears Up with daughters Mable 13, and Rosa 1
-the 1896 census has a person named Yells in Night (F)
-the 1898 census of the Piegan has Clears Up married to Calls at Night (F) age 29 = b. 1869 with daughter Mable 10 and Rosa 2
-in the 1910 census Clears Up has a wife named Howls at Night (F) b. 1878 (too late)
-in the 1916 Blackfeet census Clears Up had a wife named Hollars at Night (F) b. 1878 (too late)
-(Curator Note) does Yells at Night = Yells in Night = Howls at Night = Hollars at Night = Calls at Night which are all Piegan persons born between 1869 - 1878?
-Yells at Night was a patient inmate at Canton 1906-1908, a period under Oscar Gifford in which few records were kept that have yet been identified. Yells at Night appears in a 1910 record table 7 line 75 by Harry Hummer confirming the diagnosis but does not identify the gender
-the Keepers has this person identified as male (numerous census documents use this name as female)
-the 1934 ltr by LL Culp says that tier 4 is all males, since Yells at Night, line 36 is in tier 4 plot 36 he would therefore be male.
