About Yetta Warmbrand

Edith Jazmin (whose Hebrew name is Yehudit) recalls that she was named after an aunt who had passed away. Yetta (whose Hebrew name was Yehudit) died a few years before Edith was born. Below is some other evidence of the connection between Yetta and the Lazar family:

  1. The 1910 Ellis Island Manifest shows "Nettie Kinsbruner" (nee Stetner) arriving in the US. She also had traveling with her someone named "Edes Lazar" who is listed as her "sister-in-law". Nettie's brother, Samuel, was married to Sarah Lazar, who appears to be Edes' sister.
  2. The 1916 marriage record of "Max Warenbrand" and "Yettie Leiser", lists Yettie as daughter of "Israel Leiser" and "Lena Forer" from Austria. At the time, both Max and Yettie lived at 97 Lillie St. in Newark
  3. Yetta's apparent brother, Mendel, used the name Führer as his surname. Jews in Bukowina sometimes had their mother's maiden name as their legal surname, e.g., if their parents were not legally married (but only under rabbinical law). Also, Yetta's marriage record (which spelled her mother's maiden name as Forer) was written in the US by people likely not familiar with the proper spelling of her name. (Yetta was married in the US, and had no children.)
  4. The 1917 Newark directory shows a "Samuel Steatner" living in Newark at 97 Lillie St.
  5. The 1920 US Census shows the "Worenbrand" family lived at 211 Livingston St. in Newark, while the "Stetner" family lived at 172 Livingston St. in Newark.
  6. The 1925 NY Census and 1930 US Census show the "Warmbrandt"/"Warmbrand" family living in NYC.
  7. The NYC death record of Yetta Warmbrand nee Lazar lists her parents and Israel and Leah Lazar. it also states that she was buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
  8. A photograph of Yetta's tombstone shows that Yetta's Hebrew name was Yehudis. It is my understanding that the name "Edes" is a nickname or variation of Yehudis.
