Contributor's Notes: It is believed the McCabes originated in Scotland
but joined the Protestant families who migrated across the North Channel to Ireland in the 17th century. Our research revealed McCabes from both Ireland and Scotland but John Leonidas Cabe (#23) of Samuel Cabe's branch of the family believed John McCabe, Sr. came to America from Scotland. We spent considerable time and money in an effort to trace John McCabe back to his years~of service during the Revolutionary War but found nothing prior to 1790 when he appeared on the Lincoln County, North Carolina census.

Following is a copy of a memorandum written by Annie "Cabe" Henry as dictated by her father, John Leonidas Cabe (#23), which was found in 1980 by Edythe "Henry" Woodward among her deceased mother's papers. The memorandum was written with a lead pencil on an old ledger sheet and was too dim to be xeroxed.

"Beginning of John L. Cabe family, record on his father's side. They originated in Scotland. Came to America before the Revolutionary War. Went through the war, was a young man, went to North Carolina."

The memorandun was written December 3, 1926, in Denver, Colorado. There was no information given about the children of the first John McCabe but the Lincoln County, North Carolina 1790 census lists - McCabe, Jonathan; 03-04-06.
