About Zachariah Rhodes, of Pawtuxet

  • On account of difficulty about compulsory payment for preaching, he with others removed to Rhode Island. He settled at Pawtuxet and was a large land proprietor and was Deputy, etc.

'William Carpenter's lot was separated from the lot of Robert Coles by a highway. "Town Street" is now Main Street, and the highway is Meeting Street, so called because of the Friends* Meeting House which now occupies William Carpenter's lot. Immediately after the signing of the Initial Deed the Proprietors made division of their purchase. William Carpenter and his father-in-law, William Arnold, with ZACHARIAH RHOAD, William Harris, and Robert Coles, for their shares were allotted a large tract at " Pautuxett," where they at once made settlement. It was a beautiful meadow-land, about four miles southerly from Providence, bounded on the east by Narragansett Bay and on the south by the Pawtuxet River. In later years it was known as "Cranston," and is now undergoing the changes consequent upon the rapid growth of Providence, which is yearly adding its acres to blocks of buildings. (1)

From my family history:

First Generation in America

I #1 Zachariah Rhodes

He was born in Lancashire, England in the year 1603, and died by drowning off Pawtuxet, Rhode Island (not the present Pawtuckett) on April 10th 1666. He came to Massachusetts after the landing of the Mayflower. He and his brother Henry appeared in the Massachusetts Colony at about the same time. (Henry was born 1608 in Lancashire, England and died at Lynn, Massachusetts in 1675.) They were sons of Walter Rhodes (Walter was the son of Sir Geoffry Rhodes) of the 4th British line Willemus (Willam the Conquerer). Walter emigrated to America in 1620. Zachariah, who was 17 at the time, remained in England and did not come to America until 1640. On March 9th, 1646 he married Joanna Arnold who was born in Cheselbourne, Dorsetshire, England February 27, 1617 and died at Pawtuxet, Rhode Island in 1693. She was the daughter of William and Christian (Peake) Arnold. (William Arnold baptised June 24th, 1587 at Cheselbourne, Dorset and died about 1676. Christian was from Somerset and baptised February 15, 1583. Date of death not recorded.) William Arnold, his wife Christian and four children sailed from Dartmouth, England, Friday May 1st, 1635 and arrived in New England June 24th, 1635 and went to Providence April 20th, 1636 then to Newport, Rhode Island November 19, 1651. He had many grants of land and filled important offices of trust in the colony. He was one of the original 13 proprietors of the Providence Plantation.)

6. Rebecca Rhodes (d.) 1727 (m.) February 3, 1672 to Nicholas Power who died December 19th, 1673. She then remarried to Daniel Williams (son of Roger and Mary Williams). Daniel was born February 1642 and died May 14, 1712.

After Zachariah's death, Joanna Arnold married Samuel Reape of Newport, Rhode Island on January 11, 1667.

Zachariah Rhodes ("Zachary")

Zachariah Rhodes landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts and is first recorded at Rehoboth in 1643 and left before 1646 from whence he was banished for being "Too much in the way of dipping." (Dipping in those days had a special connotation of obscure meaning and had to do with mortgages or borrowing on property.) He had refused to comply with Massachusetts Law compelling the support of preachers and was imprisoned for a short time in Boston for stating "the courts have naught to do with matters of religion." He joined Roger Williams first at Seacunk (now Rehoboth) and then in 1645 he was Commissioner and Deputy Town Counsellor of Providence. He served its Government in various capacities and as Representative to the General Court in 1659, 61 and 63. He is the ancestor through which qualification is made for admittance to the Society of Colonial Wars. Zachariah and his wife are buried at Pawtuxet in what has ever since been the Rhodes burying Ground. Their graves are marked by a square pile of stones without inscriptions. Pawtuxet was the home of all the Rhodes families. It is an old seaport village South of Providence on Narragansett Bay, divided by the Pawtuxet River. The northern half was in the town of Cranston, the southern half in the town of Warwick. Careful distinction must be made between Pawtucket, which is a large manufacturing town inland, and Pawtuxet, above.
Born in Weymouth, Dorset, England to Walter & Elizabeth Rhodes. Married Joanna Arnold 7 Mar 1645/6 in Providence RI. Their child: Malachi Rhodes.
