About Zachariah Henry Smith

ID: I8288 Name: Zachariah SMITH Surname: Smith Given Name: Zachariah Sex: M Birth: ABT 1735 in ,Orange,Va. Death: ABT 1816 in ,Mercer,Ky. _UID: FB822F907B41D511BD9EBDC3D79617316E9E Note: Zacharias moved to Kentucky about 1777 with other individuals from Germanna, including his brothers Adam and John. He was in the church records fairly often up to the year 1777 but he does not appear after that year in the church records. Suggestions have been made that his wives were Anne Elizabeth Fishback, the first wife, and Sarah Anne Watts. I believe it is correct that we would like better proof of both of these women.

One other individual who moved at the time of Zacharias Smith was Jacob Holtzclaw, son of 1714 Jacob. Jacob (Jr.) married Susanna Thomas, the sister of Barbara Thomas who had married Jacob Blankenbaker. These women were daughters of John Thomas (Jr.) and granddaughters of Anna Maria (nee) Blankenbaker. Henry Blankenbaker and the wife of Jacob Holtzclaw, Jr. were first cousins. John Blankenbaker says he raised a crop of corn in Ky. in 1776. Secnd wife was Sarah Ann Watts. The thirteen hundred and seventy-first note in a series on the Germanna Colonies Zachariah Smith was the son of J. Michael Smith (Jr.) and was possibly born around 1735. He died in Mercer Co., KY about 1816. He married Ann Elizabeth Fishback, the daughter of John Frederick Fishback and his wife, Ann Elizabeth Holtzclaw. Therefore, she had two ancestors in the First Germanna Colony. There is a record that they were sponsors for the baptism of a child in 1767. She probably died not too long after this time. When Zachariah sold land in 1777, his wife was Sarah Ann. Probably they were married around 1770 for they had a daughter who married William Smith in 1788. The parentage of Sarah Ann is not proven. There is a record that Zacharias raised a crop of corn in 1776 in Kentucky Co., (later Lincoln and finally Mercer Co., KY) and took out land rights in 1779-80. Zacharias served in the Revolutionary War in a detachment of Lincoln Co. militia under the command of Ensign John Smith who may have been his brother. These records are identical to those of Jacob Holtzclaw, the son of the 1714 colonist, who married Susanna, daughter of John Thomas, Jr. Susanna was Zacharias' first cousin as John Thomas, Jr. and Anna Magdalena Thomas Smith were brother and sister. A series of deeds in Kentucky furnishes some clues as to the children of Zacharias. By his first wife, Ann Elizabeth Fishback: 1. William Smith (he left seven children), 2. Elizabeth Smith m. Capt. Henry Grider of Swiss Mennonite descent, 3. Mary Smith m. William Powell, 4. Jesse Smith m. Joanna Pendleton. By his second wife, Sarah Ann, these children resulted: 5. Zachariah Smith, Jr. m. Elizabeth, 6. Peter Smith m. Elizabeth, 7. Jeremiah Smith m. Polly, 8. James Smith m. Margaret, 9. Samuel Smith, 10. Abraham Smith m. Nancy, 11. Sally Smith m.1 a cousin, William Smith and m.2 Uriah Taylor. Since Sally Smith had a daughter who was married in 1788, Sally was probably one of the older children of the second marriage. (Zachariah Smith and Elijah Holtzclaw were on the marriage bond.) This continues to show the close connection of the Smiths and Holtzclaws. 12. Mildred Smith m. Joseph Fisher. 13. Nancy Smith m. Robert Ragan. Sarah Browder, who descends from this family, is not entirely convinced of these points. There are numerous uncertainties. Margaret was the daughter of Adam Fisher and Elizabeth Garr. Does anyone have the complete will of Adam. For some unknown reason, I only made a note of his daughter Margaret -- I guess because the Peter Watts was significant for me. Adam's will was written April 25, 1804 and probated Oct 1812 Mercer Co. At least I made note of that The Peter Watts made me take notice because he was one of Abraham Thomas's best friends (son of Michael Thomas.) in fact, Abraham and Susannah Smith Thomas named their last son, Peter Watts Thomas born 1798. above from Evelyn Wallace

following from Marilyn at gneolog@aol.com I spent some time in Mercer Co, KY on my trip to SLC last week. Got more info on lines of Anna Magdalena Thomas Smith. Going to send it on in case anyone is interested. I need to find about 60 acres of land that Zachariah had in Culpeper Co, VA so if anyone has land records for him there, would you please send them my way. Also if any one has estate info on Zachariah in Mercer Co or any other info on him from that county. I was so excited with the land record info-- tedious but productive. Take care. Zachariah and Jesse have purchased all the tracts of Zachariah, deceased and have agreed to make a division among themselves. So without these wonderful land records, we would never know the children of Zachariah Smith Zachariah's estate recorded WB 5 page 349 in 1817 -- don't know why I did not make note of this -- I did a few others -- oh well, another unfinished chore but the reference could be included in the following note: I don't have the book and page for this record but have the note in my files In 1817 Sarah Ann (Watts) Smith deeded to Zachariah, James, and Jesse Smith, and to Joseph Fisher, Robert Ragan, and to Jeremiah, Samuel, and Abraham Smith of Garrard Co. all of rights in the land of her deceased husband, Zachariah, on condition that they pay her $91 annually in accordance with notes that she holds from them. Sarah Ann did not die until 1835 and she mentions her daughter Nancy Ragan?s second son, Reuben G. Ragan. Zacharias Ragan, the eldest son of Nancy, was also mentioned. Three daughters were mentioned, Sally Taylor, Mildred Fisher, and Nancy Ragan. It is believed that all of these people were Sarah Ann?s own children.

Zachariah, John and Adam were sons of John Michael and Anna Magdalena Thomas Smith. James Thomas was the son of Zachariah. None of the daughters or sons in law of John Michael and Anna Magdalena went to KY. as far as I can tell -- remaining in Culpeper/Madison Co., VA Both Zachariah AKA Zacharias Smith and his brother, John sold their land in Culpeper Co in 1777 -- same day -- to Henry Field Jr. When Henry Fields Jr died in Culpeper Co.
