Shortly after their marriage, Zack worked in the charcoal kilns near Cherryville, Missouri. Later on Zack worked for John Beckham on a farm on Little Indian Creek in Washington County, Missouri. On the old James Wiley place on Crooked Creek near Sligo, he raised cattle on shares with Bill Lay until the start of the Depression. Eliza & Zack saved enough money selling milk, eggs and some stock enabling them to buy a farm in 1931. Eliza did the usual work of a farmer's wife at that time. In adition to bearing and raising 7 children, she prepared 3 meals a day from scratch. She carried water, washed & ironed clothes, and milked cows twice daily. In her spare time, she helped in the fields with crops. Often she helped to clear new ground.
