About Zorilda Beatrice Gadd

Born in Maitland, she was the 5th of 10 children, 1 of which died young.

Her family moved to Sydney in 1898 when she was 6, after the Synagogue there closed.

Her father died unexpectedly when she was 9. Apparently some funds were raised for the family by the Jewish community, but her mother still had to take in washing to manage. At least 2 of her siblings were then raised by other family members.

At the time of her marriage she was a tailoresse. After getting married in Sydney (at her new husband's house) she and Archibald moved to Wollongong where they lived in 121 Crown St for many years, above the barber shop where her husband worked.

She remained in Wollongong until she died aged 87.

See her grandfathers Joseph Friedman & A A Levi for detailed profiles of their lives.

RESEARCH

Maternal grandfather Joseph Friedman's city of birth in poland/russia. Probably from his death cert or the birth cert of one of the children. Graham said is was Poselyn.

Try to get a copy of Joseph Friedman's signature to match with his naturalisation certificate - from a child's birth/marriage or death cert?

Sarah Levi (Moses) arrival in Sydney.

TRAVEL

The Maitland Jewish Cemetery where her maternal grandparents & 2 uncles brothers are buried (PDF attached to them).

Nanna died in the Catholic Nursing Home on Cliff Rd Wollongong.
Rev C.T.Knibb drove down from his parish at French's Forrest in Sydney
to conduct the service in the West Wollongong Uniting Church in Fisher St.
She once said "My Knibb is my minister because he visited Pop when he was sick" at Stanwell Tops when Mr Knibb was the Presbyterian Minister at Wollongong. Nanna and Pop 's ashes are in the Wollongong Lawn Crematorium - their plaques in the roadside Rose Garden.
When I was the Assistant to the Presbyterian Minister in Wollongong when I conducted a funeral at the Crematorium I would park near their plaque and pay my respects before walking up to the Crematorium.
