About Zvi (Hirsch) Perez Chajes, Chief Rabbi of Vienna
Zwi Perez Chajes, also Tzvi-Peretz Hayot, (1876 – 14 December 1927) was a rabbi, historian, biblical scholar and a notable Zionist leader.
Biography
Chajes was born in 1876 in Brody, then in Austria-Hungary, now in Ukraine. He was the grandson of the Zvi Hirsch Chajes. Hayot learned in a Yeshiva and was ordained as a rabbi and also studied at a university. He served as the rabbi of the Jewish community in Florence, Italy from 1901 and also headed the rabbinical school in Florence. Subsequently and until 1918, Hayot served as a rabbi in the city of Trieste. From 1918 to his death, Chajes served as the chief rabbi of the Jewish community of Vienna. In addition, he was also the Chairman of the Zionist General Council from 1921 to 1925. Chajes died in Vienna in 1927. His remains were later taken to Israel and he was reburied in the Trumpeldor cemetery in Tel Aviv. The main Jewish school in Vienna is named after him.

נולד בעיירה ברודי שבגליציה, תחת השם חיה'ס (בנה של חיה), ששובש לאחר מכן לחיות. נכדו של המהר"ץ חיות. למד בישיבה והוסמך כרב, ובנוסף למד באוניברסיטה. חיות כיהן כרב הקהילה בפירנצה מ-1901, עסק בהוראה בבית המדרש לרבנים בפירנצה ובהוראה לחקר המקרא באוניברסיטה המקומית. בפירנצה התקרב אליו בן הקהילה, ד"ר יהודה פצ'יפיצ'י, והושפע ממנו רבות. פצ'יפיצ'י, שהפך מאוחר יותר לאחד ממנהיגיה הבולטים של יהדות איטליה, ראה ברב חיות את מורו ורבו. ב-1912 היה לרבה של קהילת טריאסטה, והוציא לאור עיתון בשם איל מֶסָגֶרו אישראליטיקו ("מבשר ישראל"). משנת 1918 היה הרב הראשי של וינה והקים שם בית מדרש למורים. היה מראשוני הרבנים שתמכו בציונות. בנוסף היה היושב ראש הראשון של הוועד הפועל הציוני בין השנים (1921–1925), הטיף לציונות ופעל רבות למען חינוך יהודי וציוני. חיות דגל בשלום בין העמים, והשתתף בוועידת השלום בסן רמו. בשנת 1923 ארגן את האגודה היהודית למען חבר הלאומים, ושימש נשיאה עד מותו
הרב צבי פרץ חיות היה רווק כל ימיו. נפטר בווינה בשנת 1927, בשנת 1950 עצמותיו הועלו לארץ ישראל ביוזמתה של אניטה מילר-כהן, והוא נקבר בבית הקברות טרומפלדור בתל אביב. בית הספר היהודי המרכזי בעיר וינה ורחובות בחיפה ובתל אביב קרויים על שמו
