Big Joe Came to the Overton Co. Tenn. area in 1799 with his dad Col. Stephen Calvin Copeland. They became friends with Cherokee Chief Nettle Carrier and Joe later married his daughter Hannah Thacker Ward. ( From the Jefferson Co. History Book ) 201 COPELAND Big Joe Copeland was born circa 1783 in NC. and married Hannah Thacker 15 Jan 1806 in Overton Co. Tn. He died 27 Apr 1857, and is buried there in Copeland Cove. There are many stories of his strength and size. He could crack walnuts with his teeth and lift hogs over the fence.
