116th New York Infantry Regiment
Called the "Iron Hearted Regiment"
The 116th Regiment was organized at Camp Morgan, Buffalo, Erie County, N. Y., August 10 to September 3, 1862. The men were mustered in for three years service with 929 men under Colonel Edward P. Chapin, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Cottier and Major George M. Love.
Attached to - Nine companies left the State September 5, 1862; Company K joined later in September; the regiment served in the 8th Corps, Middle Department, at Baltimore, Md., from September 7, 1862; arrived at Ship Island, La., December 4, 1862; served in 3d Brigade, 3d Division, Department of the Gulf, from January, 1863; in 1st Brigade, 3d Division, 19th Corps, from February, 1863; in 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 19th Corps, from April, 1863; in 3d Brigade, 1st Division, 19th Corps, from February, 1864; in 1st Brigade, same division and corps, from March, 1864; in 3d Brigade, same division and corps, from May 9, 1864; in 1st Brigade, same division and corps, from June, 1864; with the Army of the Shenandoah, from October, 1864; in the defenses, of Washington, D. C., from April, 1865; and it was honorably discharged and mustered out, under Col. Geo. M. Love, June 8, 1865, at Washington, D. C. The veterans and recruits transferred to 90th New York Infantry.
The Regiment lost 5 officers and 91 enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 officers and 124 enlisted men to disease, a total of 222.
