Note: There are so many lists that navigation through them becomes more than a little confusing. Company L was raised in Montgomery and Chester Counties

There are four pages that are the clearest in detailing members of Company L. at mustering out. Not all ranks are given:

In the interest of detailing the life of Col. Theodore Weber Bean and the men who served under him, I catalog the soldiers here (Michael M. van Beuren, descendant of Col. (then Captain) Bean)

commentary

  • It can't really be called nepotism, but the ranking officers have many fairly close relationships. Some of these are noted in the text above.
  • Capt. Theo. Bean's father, Hon. William Bean , had been dead a few years by the time the war broke out.
  • It may be of interest to some that the pioneering Civil War balloonist, Thaddeus Lowe, used Cloud's Mills, the final encampment of Co. L, as a launch site. Lowe's daughter married into the same Stinson family as Capt. Theo. Bean's son, William Heebner Bean. ( Mary Bean ) . When Capt. Theo. Bean's youngest son married in 1903, Thaddeus Lowe was in attendance

~• guessing that ages are as of date of beginning of service: Washington DC, May 8th 1865 (they don't seem to be accurate on the original document)

remarks

  1. When the Union Army was near defeat at the Battles of Cedar Creek, it was the 17th PA cav. that was detailed to escort Gen. Sheridan to the front, an action that turned the tide in that crucial battle
  2. It was Capt. Theo. Bean who was assigned the duty of Provost Marshall at a time when he was ordered to hang several of Mosby's raiders (see his timeline)
