The 26th Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers were primarily German-speaking immigrants of southeastern Wisconsin. They enlisted in August 1862. This regiment participated in the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Lookout Mountain and Averasboro, as well as Sherman's march to the sea.
