Abell's Artillery Company B, Milton Light Artillery

http://battleofolustee.org/abell.html http://battleofolustee.org/confederate_order.html http://binkypro.com/EJ/mla/Milton_Light_Artillery/History.html The Milton Light Artillery was organized by J.L. Dunham at Appalachicola, Fla., in November, 1861, and was mustered into Confederate service there late that month. Dunham was assisted by Lieutenants Abell (senior 1st), Bull (junior 1st), Stephens (senior 2nd) and Rambo (junior 2nd). The Milton Light Artillery was named in honor of John Milton. Moved to Tallahassee, Fla., the company was armed with six guns – three 12-pounder brass rifles and three 12-pounder howitzers. Seven officers and 136 enlisted men were mustered as members of the unit. In the spring of 1862 the Milton Light Artillery was deployed to east Florida and camped near the Three Mile Branch, Jacksonville (Camp Finnegan). The company took part in the action at St. John's Bluff and several engagements around Jacksonville. In the summer of 1863 the company was divided into two, forming companies "A" and "B" of the organization. Capt. Dunham headed up Company "A," and retained Lieutenants Bull and Rambo. Mortimer Bates was elected junior 2nd lieutenant. Company "B", under Abell (receiving a promotion to captain), was given two of the unit's guns at that time, apparently two howitzers. In addition to Capt. Abell, 2 other officers and 45 enlisted men were transferred to the unit. Capt. Abell's company was later reenforced with two more pieces, forming a full 4-gun battery. Only a few months passed when Lt. Bull of Company "A" was killed; Lt. Bates then took charge of his section. George Hines succeeded to the position of junior 2nd lieutenant. The section Bates commanded took part in the fight at Darby's Hill (MeClenney). Like almost all Civil War units Company "A," Milton Light Artillery was frequently known by an alternate designation derived from the name of its commanding officer. Names of this type used by or for the unit are: Joseph L. Dunham's Artillery, Henry F. Abel's Artillery, Mortimer W. Bates' Artillery, and Drury Rambo's Artillery. The battery was named after Florida's 5th governor, John Milton, who served from Oct. 7, 1861 to April 1, 1865. http://www.civilwarmicrofilm.com/site/viewer/unitSoldierIndex.php?r...
