The land of the existing building was given to the Pyt family in around 1225 by the abbess of Shaftesbury. The Pyts (alias Bennett, as homeage to the Benedictine Abbey of Shaftesbury), then lived continuously on the estate until around 1651. They were forced to sell in order to pay fines levied against them by Parliament following the Civil war, as the Pyts (alias Bennetts) fought for the Royalists.
In 1669, Anthony Bennett, eldest brother of Col. William, sold Pythouse to the Dove family to pay off accrued debts.
In 1565 the Herald's Visitation of Wiltshire officially recorded the Pythouse Bennett coat arms solely as the red double-headed eagle with the Cornish Chough upon a whelk shell as the crest. The Visitation was authorised by the College of Arms, under license of the Crown in London, to record the names of the gentry, nobility and their ancestors and descendants with reference to their right to bear arms. These arms were then duly blazoned, recorded and stored with the College as solid proof that they were legitimate. Around the year 1560 Thomas Bennett of Pythouse married Mary Ashlock, daughter of Christopher Ashlock. As Mary had no brothers to carry on the Ashlock name and coat of arms, the arms were allowed to be adopted by William and Mary's son Thomas after William's death in 1591.

Note 1 - William has had two wives linked to his profile on Geni - Sarah Hutchison and Mary Hutchison. We need some evidence of these connections
Note 2 - A second son - William (1465-1537) born Wiveliscombe, Somerset was linked to William Pyt alias Bennet The MyHeritage matches suggest that this was the son of William Bennett and Sarah Ann Hutchison, which is the source of Note 1 above. Other matches suggest that his parents were Leonard William Bennet and Sarah Hutchison.

Meria/Maria Bennett
Originally when I looked at the Tollard Royal registers I thought that the Meria Bennett who was buried in 1746 was the first wife of John Bennett (J4). This was also how Dennis Bill and John Owen interpreted the facts.
Subsequent discoveries through the work of John Bennett of San Clemente and Richard Travell made me look at the evidence again. As a result I changed my mind and made the above conclusions. The early burial registers in the following table refer to “Mr John snr” ( I suggest H6), “Mr John “ (i2) and plain “John” who I think was the husband of Maria (i3) initially and Dorothy her sister.
The following entries from the Sarum Marriage Licence Bonds (located through https://www.familyhistoryonline.net/ suggest that there were 2 John Bennetts as –
- both are described as bachelors
- One is noted as junr (suggesting his father was John)
