When sailing south from England, brig Onni, like square rigged vessels used to, first sailed towards Cape Verde or Azores, then SW, somewhat close to South America. This was in order to catch steady westerlies, the roaring forties which would bring the ship fast past Cape of Good Hope and to South Australian coast.

  • Sept 13 1854 Batavia "Russian brig Onni which left Melbourne in May to Singapore called in at Batavia was seized in the outer roads by H.M. sloop Jely as prise but was subsequently released in consequense of the British had no proclamation of war published there. Onni has since been sold at Batavia to a Swedish firm"
