The county was created in 1856 and organized in 1865. It was named in honor of Thomas Pendleton Burnett (Sept. 3, 1800 - Nov. 5, 1846), a genial and kind-hearted lawyer who was prominent during the territorial days of Wisconsin.
Early European settlers were mostly immigrants from Norway and Sweden.
The St. Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin have reservation lands in Burnett County and are the county's largest employer. Early settlers were mostly Norwegian and Swedish immigrants.
