Cerro Gordo Mining Town

Project Tags

Cerro Gordo, is a privately owned mining town located on the western slope of the Inyo Mountains. This group was made to compile history along with profiles of all residents of Cerro Gordo into one place so feel free add people with connections to the town.

About

History

The earliest known attempts of silver prospecting was when a group of Mexicans came searching sometime before 1862. They then nicknamed the mountain Cerro Gordo, meaning "Fat Hill"

By about 1920, only 10 men were still employed by the Cerro Gordo mines company. At this time, silver-lead ore was being shipped.

Today

Cerro Gordo is today owned by Brent Underwood, who with a group of investors bought the property in July 2018.
Brent has been living in Cerro Gordo full-time since March 2020 with the intention of restoring & maintaining the town's rich history.
