Located in Chantilly, France (40km North of Paris), the château consists of two attached buildings: the Petit Château (built for Anne I, duc de Montmorency in 1560), and the Grand Château (originally constructed in the 10th - 14th centuries, replaced by a newer structure built between 1528 and 1531).
The Grand Château was badly damaged during the French Revolution and rebuilt in the 1870s.
In 1643 Anne of Austria (wife of Louis XII, King of France) gave the château to the Princess of Condé, Charlotte Marguerite, duchesse de Montmorency. Her son, Louis II de Bourbon dit "le Grand Condé", prince de Condé was responsible for the construction of the many beautiful parks on the grounds. The great stables -- the largest in Europe -- were constructed in the 18th century by Louis II's great grandson, Louis IV Henri de Bourbon, prince de Condé.
The château currently houses the Condé Museum (Musée Condé), one of the finest art galleries in France.
