This project is to honor Native Americans who took part in the Civil War and were part of the detachments that became known as the Kansas Indian Home Guards. They were known as Cherokee Home Guards or Indian Home Guards. The battles that they were in as well from both sides of the war.
Seeking to strengthen their position in Kansas and badly needing manpower, the commanders of the Union Army made the decision to recruit and train Indian soldiers from the ranks of displaced tribes. Ultimately, the army created three regiments of Native Americans known as the Indian Home Guards.
