One of the original cemeteries in Ocala. A lot of the cemetery records were lost in a fire, but one learned individual at the City of Ocala, said that at one time the cemetery was full of markers. Over the years, they have been lost, stolen or just plain rotted away, according to him. Today, there are many markers left, and most of them are in poor repair.

There are two gates leading into the cemetery. The West gate has the sign, Evergreen, above the gate. The East gate, has no sign, but a marble placard placed in the gate. Another call to the City of Ocala gathered more information. It seems that the traditional Negro Cemetery of the day, was across the street in Northside Cemetery. However, there was a part of the White cemetery that was chosen to honour the Slaves and early residents of the day. That part of the cemetery was called the Ruben Mitchell Memorial Garden. They were not sure where the dividing line stopped nor started.
