According to our family tradition the first Gelehrter we have record of was originally form Kolomya (today Ukraine) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolomyia . The town had a renowned Jewish community. Around 1820 he was sent to Moldova (today Romania) to establish a first yeshiva on the Romanian soil. By the end of the 19th century the Gelehrters modified their family name in "Ghelerter". Memebers of the family were very active in the socialist movement (dr. Leon Litman Ghelerter, Max Vexler, Ion Sion -husband of Laura Ghelerter-). Moni (Solomon Ghelerter) born in 1905 was a famous Jewish Romanian scene director, Beate Fredanov (married to dr.Iuliu Ghelerter) was a famous actress in the Romanian theater.
