H.P. Lovecraft's old New England family, ancestry and milieu had a documented influence on his art. For those of us who grew up on his terrifying and creative stories, this project is to help us understand those familial and societal impacts.

Please participate by finding ways in which his family, ancestors, ancestral home, or old New England environment are reflected in his stories and adding both family links and the related vignettes to this project. You'll find two sources cited below that have a lot of material. Please use quotes and cite the source.

After his father was hospitalized with mental illness, Lovecraft was raised by his mother (Susan Sarah Phillips Lovecraft), his two aunts (Lillian Delora Phillips and Annie Emeline Phillips), and his grandfather, Whipple Van Buren Phillips. "His grandfather encouraged his reading, providing him with classics such as The Arabian Nights, Bulfinch's Age of Fable, and children's versions of The Iliad and The Odyssey. His grandfather also stirred young Howard's interest in the weird by telling him his own original tales of Gothic horror. His mother, on the other hand, worried that these stories would upset him."
