New Zealand Historic Places Trust changed its name to Heritage New Zealand on 14 April 2014. The Te Reo Maori name of the organisation, Pouhere Taonga, remained the same.

the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 replaced the Historic Places Act 1993 on 20 May 2014.

The New Zealand Heritage List at www.heritage.org.nz can be searched for information about New Zealand's significant heritage places and identifies New Zealand's significant and valued historical and cultural heritage places.

The List is divided into 5 parts:

1. Historic Places: Category 1 (historic places have/ are of special or outstanding historical or cultural significance or value) or Category 2 (historic places are of historical or cultural significance or value)

2. Historic Area: Groups of related historical places

3. Waahi Tuupuna: Places important to Maori for ancestral significance and associated cultural and traditional values

4. Waahi Tapu: Places sacred to Maori in the traditional, spiritual, religious, ritual or mythological sense

5. Waahi Tapu Areas: Areas that contain one or more Waahi Tapu
