The Hicks Cemetery in the Old 12th District of Fentress County is located within the private retirement development of RIVER PARK off the Gatewood Ford Road approximately 1 1/2 miles east of the Old Barger Church. The area is gated for protection and permission should be gained prior to visiting. The cemetery is wooded but kept
in a clear but rustic condition by the Hicks Cemetery Association which owns the property in cooperation with the land developers to prevent vandalism. Please respect this arrangement. You can contact the Hicks Cemetery Association by telephone (423) 628-2395. The Cemetery is
known to have exsisted prior to the War Between the States
and probabley several years prior. The land surrounding
the Cemetery was once the homes of several early pioneers
who made their way to Fentress County in the 1820's. The
first land entry where the Cemetery is located was by
Thomas Butler who migrated from Virginia to the Oliver Springs area. His entry, #224, was entered in Roane County which extended westward including Fentress County at that time on March 5, 1808. He lifted this entry 1813 and it is not known whether or not he ever did or planned to settle on the entry. He also obtained in 1807 another entry, #249 in 1807 which included the forks of the Clear Fork River which is app. 1/2 mile east along the old trace which later became Piles Turnpike. This area is very historic and it is believed that many of the early settlers to this area lie buried in unmarked graves in the old cemetery, such as Wiley Downs, Thomas Sutton and James Gray, who once owned the land which included the cemetery.
