Profiles

This project seeks to collect the Jewish families of Mehlingen, a municipality in the district of Kaiserslautern in Rhineland-Palatinate in western Germany. A list of the 54 families living in Mehlingen in 1803 includes 8 Jewish families. In 1808, the Jews of Mehlingen were required to take surnames. The surnames taken were Becker, Eisemann, Ehrlich, Hohmann, Kraus, Kraehmer, Manuel, Mai, Reinhard and Straus. Both of these lists and additional genealogical information is included in Verbandsgemeinde Enkenbach-Alsenborn: Ihre Burger 1650 – 1850. The book, A Reminder: Witnesses of the Past by Lothar Horter and Michael Tilly and published in English by the Straus Historical Society, contains additional information about the Jews of Mehlingen and neighboring Sembach along with a listing of the 42 gravestones still legible in the Jewish Cemetery in Mehlingen.
