This project seeks to collect all of the Jewish families from Orasu Nou, Romania.
Oraşu Nou is a commune of 7,100 inhabitants in Satu Mare County, Romania, formerly Szatmar megye (county), Hungary. It comprises five villages:
Oraşu Nou (Avasújváros), Oraşu Nou-Vii (Nagyhegy) , Prilog (Rózsapallag), Prilog-Vii (Rózsapallaghegy), and Remetea Oaşului (Kőszegremete).
The 1769 Conscriptio Judaeorum (Jewish Census) lists only 177 Jewish families in all of Szatmar megye out of a total population of more than 100,000. By 1785-87 there were still fewer than 2,800 Jews in all of Szatmar megye (county) increasing to almost 7,000 by 1828 with six Jewish families among the 99 households living in Avas Ujvaros. The community's Jewish population increased to 128, about 10 percent of the total population.
