Puławy was founded in the Fifteenth Century near a Vistula River crossing. In the Seventeenth Century it became the home of noble families. The town has a rich, and sometimes bloody history, having at various times been occupied by the Swedes, the French, the Austrians, the Russians, and the Germans. It lies about 53 km by road from Lublin. In 1900, its Jewish population was about 4,000.
