Address: West Coast Road, Springfield, Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand.
Kōwai Pass is less than one kilometre from Springfield, is a small town in the Selwyn District of Canterbury, in the South Island of New Zealand. Kōwai is a South Island form of kōwhai, the yellow-flowering native tree. As it happens the kōwhai is not found in this locality, which has led some investigators to think the name is really Ko Wai: lit. rivers or water. The Māori name for Springfield is Tawera. Located at the foot of the Southern Alps, 65 kilometres west of Christchurch, Springfield is the most westerly town of the central Canterbury Plains.
Springfield - Saint Peter Church and Kōwai Pass Cemetery, serving the populations of Springfield and the surrounding farming area of the Malvern Hills (including Annat, Kōwai, and Sheffield) is set in a secluded location beside the main highway. All records prior to 1903 have disappeared, having either been lost or destroyed in a fire.
The cemetery is screened from the road by a hedge and surrounded by trees. It is easily accessed from the West Coast Road and limited parking is available on the road frontage. Water is available
