We are searching for others of Katzenbauer or Kazenbauer descent. Our ancestor Hannah Sophia Katzenbauer, who was also recorded as Sophia Kazenbauer, lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She was born circa 1770 and died in 1858 in Nova Scotia. We do not know who her parents were, or where they came to Canada from. Educated guesses for the family origins are that they may have emigrated from Germany, the Netherlands, or Switzerland. We would like to connect with other people who are related to Katzenbauers, or who are Katzenbauers.

Our ancestor was known as Sophia Katzenbauer prior to her marriage, we believe. She married a Hessian (German) soldier, Johann Nicholas Batz (born 1754 - died 1811) who was garrisoned in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They married at St. Georges Little Dutch Church in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Dec. 9, 1787. Nicholas changed the spelling of his name ot Bares, and the German last name has also been spelled as Baetz. Sophia and Nicholas Batz or Bates had 7 children: Magdalene Elizabeth Bates 1789-1824; George Henry Bates 1791- ? ; John Valentine Bates 1792-1870; George William Bates 1797-1864; Henry John Bates 1799-1837; Sophia Bates 1805- ?; Rebecca Elizabeth Bates 1803-1861. Nicholas died in 1811 and is buried at the Little Dutch Church in Halifax, NS. After Nicholas passed away, Sophia married for a second time to a man with the last name Oberti on January 16, 1841.

Sophia died at the home of her son, John Valentine Bates, in Glenmore, Middle Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia in 1858. She was referred to as Sophia Bates when she died.
